Teaching skills of academic support staff

Time: Monday 24 May - 28 May 1999, 10.30 - 15.00
Place: Kajaani Polytechnic, the Faculty of Health and Welfare, Ketunpolku 4

Contents:

Day 1 The nature of teaching and learning
Although academic support staff are engaged in the learning process, and "teach" in a variety of situations, they often have no background in educational theory, therefore they cannot fully engage with the process. The day looks at the nature of learning and the learning environment and the functions of a teacher with special reference to the academic support role.

Day 2 Planning a teaching and learning event
A practical examination of the planning process for a teaching and learning event. We will look at specifying overall aims and learning outcomes and matching these to learning activities.

Day 3 Teaching Methods
A look at a variety of teaching methods covering large and smallgroups and one-to-one teaching. We will also examinestrategies for coping when everything goes wrong.

Day 4 Evaluation and Assessment
It is often difficult for academic support staff to gain feedback on their performance and on the learning undertaken by the people they teach. This workshop will look at methods of gaining such feedback and using it effectively.

Day 5 Using technology in teaching and learning
Use of technology to enhance learning is growing but it is easy to become too involved in the detail of software design rather than look to the educational theory that should underpin it. The workshop will look at tools for assessing such technology and lead from that to those issues we need to consider when designing packages.

Trainers: Chris Powis and Alan Rosling, Nene College
